Catlins Coastal Heritage Trail
Situated in the South Catlins area of Southland, Te Atau Tai Tonga, the Catlins Coastal Heritage Trail provides a rewarding detour off the Southern Scenic Route.
Covering approximately 70 kilometres of road, part tar-seal, part gravel, the trail runs between Niagara (189 km from Dunedin) and Fortrose (50 km from Invercargill). It can be travelled in either direction, thereby complementing any existing travel plans.
The South Catlins is an area of isolated beaches, rugged coastline, native forests and wildlife, as well as beef and sheep farming. The ports at Waikawa and Fortrose each originally had a whaling station and throughout the years an interest in fishing.
The area was also known for its sawmilling. Sadly today little evidence remains of those settlements, most of which were sited on what is now private farmland.
The scenic beauty and rich history of the area unfold along the trail. To fully appreciate all thirteen trail sites, be sure to allow at least five hours for the total experience. Food is available at Fortrose, Slope Point, Curio Bay, Waikawa and Fortrose.
If you have more time to spare, prolong your stay and enjoy some genuine South Catlins hospitality from the various options of country accommodation available.
This trail is a project of South Catlins Promotions Incorporated. Hard copies can be obtained from i-Sites and museums in the area.
